Civic Education Network for Eastern and Southern Africa – CENESA

The Resolution to set up CENESA was adopted  in November 2017 at the Eastern African Civic Education Forum in Entebbe, Uganda. The idea was to establish a regional network that will provide a platform to:

– Identify common challenges and improved collective approaches

– Share resources, best practices, strategies, methodologies, and project approaches

– Strengthen synergies in research

– Build relationships with similar regional networks

An Interim Steering Committee (ISC) was appointed to spearhead the creation and formalisation of the Network. It is made up of representatives working on democracy and civic education in Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and Uganda, who double as the country-specific focal points.

The Founding organisations are:

  • Burundi: Observatory of Government Action, Solidarity For Integrated Development – Jjuka (SDI);
  • Kenya: URAIA Trust, Hanns Seidel Foundation, Well Told Story;
  • Malawi: National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE);
  • Rwanda: Human Rights First Rwanda Association (HRRFRA), Governance for Africa;
  • South Africa: Civics Academy;
  • Tanzania: Youth Partnership Countrywide (YPC); and
  • Uganda: Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI), Uganda Youth Network (UYONET)

The Founding Partners are:

  • Network for Arab Civic Education (NACE) in Tunisia
  • German Federal Agency for Civic Education Events Department
