Rehabilitation works on road eases transport for Flax residents

Residents of Flax area in Kaptagat ward, Uasin Gishu County are happy after Kapsundei-Flax road was paved, and resultantly eased transportation. The one and half -kilometre road was pathetic, and almost impassable during rainy reasons.  But currently, transportation of farm produce to markets by locals is less costly, after the rehabilitation of the road.

Action started after members of Kapsundei and Daystar Youth Groups wrote a letter to the area MCA Jonathan Ngetich, and the area (Ainabkoi) MP, Samuel Chepkongá in July 2017, in which they raised concern about the deplorable state of the road, which had made transportation of their farm produce expensive. During rainy seasons, the road would be rendered impassable and residents incurred extra cost of transporting farm produce to the main road, by hiring porters to ferry the commodities on motorcycles.

Through the letter, Ngetich, who retained his seat in the 8th August General Elections, new MP William Chepkut, in a collaborative effort sourced KSh300,000 (USD3000) from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) kitty. The funds were used to purchase 20 lorries of murram and to pay local youth who helped to repair the road. The project was undertaken in September – October 2017.

Presently, the road has been repaired and is being used the community. The letter to the two leaders was a result of quality civic education undertaken by Kaptagat Ward Civic Educator Elijah Kimtai for Daystar and Kapsundei Youth Groups that was undertaken by Rural Women Peace Link (RWPL) between April – June 2017.  RWKP is an Implementing Partner of Uraia Trust. The group gained knowledge on citizens’ engagement and platforms of engagement, which led to them to engage their leaders on the road.

Resident expressed how the repair on road has enhanced transportation in the area. Abraham Shangai of Kapsundei Youth Group in Kaptagat Ward, Ainabkoi Sub-County, said transportation of farm produce to the market has been eased.

“Since the repair of Kapsundei-Flax road and construction of water drainage system were done, we are now able to transport our farm produce to the market smoothly. I now believe in taking part in public participation to demand for better services. Information is power, and I have seen it transform my area,” says Shangai.

Victor Chirchir, a resident Kapsundei area, Kaptagat Ward, Ainabkoi Sub-County shared similar sentiments with Shangai.

“During the rainy season, we struggled not transport our farm produce such as cabbage, tomatoes, maize, beans, peas and wheat to the market. The paving of this road has made it possible to transport the commodities easily, and significantly cut on cost of transportation,” says Chirchir.
