Achievements
The Safe and Inclusive Cities programme is a strategic initiative aligned with Outcome 2 of the Uraia Trust Strategic Framework, which focuses on increasing responsiveness and accountability in public spaces. Specifically, the programme emphasizes Output 2.1, which aims to promote increased constitutionalism and adherence to the rule of law. This programme seeks to create safer, more inclusive urban environments by addressing issues of governance, accountability, and citizen participation.
The program targets adolescents and young people (age 15-24) living in the informal settlements in Nairobi and Kisumu, by strengthening their capacity to collectively address drivers of urban fragility and grow up in safe and resilient urban communities that respect their rights and offer equal opportunities for all regardless of gender.
The Programme is implemented through the support of Plan International.
Key achievements
- Strong and vibrant youth-led organizations in Nairobi and Kisumu County that engaged in participatory governance processes. Young women and men exercised their rights and responsibilities by engaging with duty bearers in the provision of related services.
- Improved safety in Nairobi and Kisumu informal settlements because of social accountability work conducted by youth groups. This included installation of security lights along feeder roads, improvements of roads to ensure safe rides for boda-boda and matatus, improved relations among youth and security agents (police, chiefs, county commissioners).
